The “Star Spangled Banner” exhibit first debuted at the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives in Athens in 2012. The exhibit’s collection includes political campaign buttons, posters, medals, postcards, publications, pins, framed art and figurines. Among the dozens of American flags on display are a 49th state flag that was official for one year when Alaska joined the U.S. in 1959, and a 34-star flag dating back to the Civil War to commemorate when Kansas joined the Union as a free state on Jan. 29, 1861. Museum Director Sandy Thompson said this year’s exhibit, which is the personal collection of Ronald Pettus, has twice as many items to view than last year.
