This photograph was taken in 1933 in Morgan County during a retrial of the nine black teenagers — dubbed the Scottsboro Boys — accused of raping two white women in 1931 near Scottsboro. In a landmark decision, Limestone County Circuit Judge James Horton, left, set aside the jury’s guilty verdict in one case because the evidence did not support it. He ordered a new trial and postponed trials in the other cases. In the end, the boys were convicted upon retrial.
