Athens mayor declares Paint the Town Purple Week

ATHENS — Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks found a purple potty planted on his lawn one recent morning.

This was no practical joke being played on a politician. It was a way to raise awareness about Relay for Life, a fundraising campaign for the American Cancer Society.

Marks took the opportunity that the purple potty presented to sign a proclamation declaring April 22-26 Paint the Town Purple Week.

“Forty teams have signed up in Limestone County to raise money, including the city of Athens,” Marks said. “All of us have been impacted by cancer in some way, whether we have personally had or have cancer, or whether we know someone who has had or does have cancer. We know people this community has lost to cancer, and that’s why we fight to save lives.”

There will be activities today through Saturday for Paint the Town Purple Week, including:
