Passing the shovel

— The beautification project happening Sunday along a section of Jefferson Street was sponsored by the Athens Rotary Club, but club member Doug Gates urges other civic groups with a little money and energy to consider doing similar projects.

“We want them to know that if they have a project like this, the city will work with them,” Gates said.

City Planning Director Mac Martin and Street Department Manager Dolph Bradford devised the planting blueprint for this project and for the landscaping of Athens High School and stadium. City and city workers will assist with the planting Sunday as well as with auguring holes in an asphalt parking lot to make the plan work.

“It’s like the Adopt-A-Mile program,” Gates said. “Hopefully, we will do other projects over the years, but others can do the same.”
