Tanner set to honor football team, dedicate road Thursday

TANNER — Tanner will present its football team with another state championship trophy Thursday morning in the school gymnasium. It’s become an annual tradition for Tanner athletics.

Football celebration in the winter, basketball celebration in the spring.

The football team’s 2A state football title was the sixth overall championship for Tanner since March 2011. To commemorate Tanner’s athletic accomplishments, the road leading to the school will be designated “Road of Champions”.

Limestone County Commission Chairman Stanley Menefee and commissioner Bill Latimer will be among those to unveil the sign in a ceremony following the 9:30 a.m. trophy presentation.

“We didn’t pencil it in this December,” joked Tanner principal Billy Owens. “We’re very fortunate and pleased. It was a great job by the players and coaches to win it again.”

At a November Limestone County Commission meeting, commissioners Gary Daly, Steve Turner, Bill Latimer and Ben Harrison unanimously approved Superintendent Tom Sisk’s request to assign the “Road of Champions” designation to Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road from the railroad bridge to Sommers Road.

Commission Chairman Stanley Menefee said the county’s Engineering Department would provide the commemorative sign. He said it might be installed near the north side of Tanner’s campus.

Tanner’s current run is one of the best in the history of Alabama high school athletics. The championship tear began in March 2011 when the boys and girls basketball teams were awarded championship trophies at the BJCC.

The Rattlers football team followed that up with its first state championship in 2012 after reaching the title game for the first time in 2011. The boys track and field team then won its first state title in 2012. The boys basketball team won the school’s fifth state championship in February 2013 and the football team repeated as champions earlier this month at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
