Limestone Sports HOF announce 2014 inductees

— The Limestone County Sports Hall of Fame will induct eight new members at its annual banquet held June 14 at Athens State University. The 2014 inductees are:

Hugo Bates: A 1955 graduate of Tanner high school, Bates is best known for his support of Athens athletics and band for more than a decade. Bates was involved in the AHS band and served as a basketball and softball manager for many years.

Bates was a crossing guard at Julian Newman Elementary School for 14 years and received the Outstanding Service Award from the Athens Booster Club in 1991.

Carrell Daniel: Carrell stared in baseball, football, baseball and track for Athens from 1950-53. The AHS fullback was selected to the All-Tennessee Valley Conference and All-State Teams in 1953.

He was the TVC 100-yard dash champion and finished 2nd place in the state track meet in the 100, 440 and 880 relays. Carrell also pithed on the AHS and summer independent league teams.

After a stellar career at Athens, Carrell received a scholarship to the University of Alabama where he played both ways on the 1955 that featured Bart Starr at quarterback. Carrell transferred to Florence State College for his final two college seasons a was a team captain his senior year.

Jimmy Elmore: A four-sport letterman at Dothan High School, Elmore excelled in football, basketball, baseball and track. Elmore moved to Athens in 1963 where he was a three-sport letter and made the All-TVC football and basketball teams for his final two seasons.

After making the All-State football team his senior year, Elmore received a football scholarship to Memphis State and played defensive back for two seasons before a career-ending injury his junior year forced him off the field.

Elmore coached the Memphis State freshman team as a senior in 1967. The 1964 Athens graduate went on to coach Austin High School.

    One of the first families of the Tanner pull is the Haneys. Horace Haney, along with brother, Shirley, co-founded the event in 1976 that draws thousands to the county each year. The sons of those pulling pioneers now run the show.

  • Local athletes lead North to soccer sweep

    East Limestone’s Dilan Sayer scored the opening goal and was named MVP of the boys game in a 3-0 win while Jordan Runion scored her team’s opening goal in a 3-1 for the girls.

  • Davidson helps North tie

    She was one of only three North players to record a hit in the opener, which ended 3-3.
    Pitching duties were shared by Lexington’s Jessie Butler, Central-Florence’s Ashley Irons and Hartselle’s Jada Hayes along with eventual North MVP Maddie Moore of Winfield.

  • Tedford, Potts take on the South in All-Star hoops game

    Stace Tedford has had a busy year at Athens. After leading the basketball team to a school-record 24 consecutive wins and regional finals appearance, he jumped straight into soccer season, where he took the varsity girls soccer team to another 5A state championship game.
    Wednesday, Tedford will be on the court again, coaching in the North-South All-Star basketball game.
