Ardmore extends 7-game win streak, remains unbeaten in 4A

— With the state baseball playoffs looming in less than three weeks, No. 6 Ardmore is hitting its stride and remains unbeaten in Class 4A.

The Tigers (13-7, 4-0 Area 14) are poised for another deep postseason run after last season’s quarterfinal appearance, winning seven consecutive games since a 3-0 defeat at the hands of 6A No. 4 Huntsville on March 8.

During its win streak, Ardmore has outscored Butler, West Limestone, Elkmont and Lauderdale County 81-13 with four shutouts. The pitching staff is led by seniors Cody Reed, Cody Elliott and Carson Pack and includes sophomore Zach Jones and juniors Garett Miller, Shane Montgomery, Brandon Jones and Kenneth Embrey.

Reed has been close to unhittable during his senior campaign, with a 0.51 ERA, 96 strikeouts and only 11 hits allowed in 41 innings against a schedule loaded with 5A and 6A opponents and top-10 teams from 3A.

The Tigers’ ace and Vanderbilt signee (4-1) became the first Limestone pitcher this season to notch a complete-game no-hitter after blanking 3A No. 4 Lauderdale County.

The 6-foot-3-inch lefty nearly rang up his first perfect game, throwing 88 pitches with 19 K’s and only one walk in the 5-0 seven-inning victory on Thursday.

In addition to leading a staff that has limited 4A opponents to 12 runs in eight games, Reed also is causing headaches at the plate.

The sometimes-first baseman is hitting .450 with a .651 on-base percentage, five intentional walks, six doubles and four home runs, including three homers in last week’s pair of games against LCHS.

If the Tigers reach the state quarterfinals again, they will eclipse last season’s 24-10 mark. They appear to be on a collision course with No. 3 Brooks (22-6), which eliminated Ardmore in two games.

Ardmore hosts county rival Elkmont at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursday and 5A Athens at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday.

The Tigers will play their final Area 14 game with an away-and-home series against Pope John Paul II-Catholic on April 7-8, closing the regular season with an April 12 doubleheader at Priceville High School against 5A Russellville and 4A Priceville.

The first round of the state playoffs will be held April 18-19.
