No. 2 ABS advances in 1A Classic

Trojans improve to 18-1

— The No. 2 Athens Bible baseball team is spending the remainder of spring break on the diamond dirt in Sylacauga instead of the sandy beaches of Panama City or Gulf Shores.

Before trekking to Sylacauga for the third annual 1A Baseball Classic hosted by Fayetteville High School, the Trojans blanked No. 4 Geneva County 17-0 on March 23 before losing their first game against 2A powerhouse G.W. Long 13-1.

On Thursday, Athens Bible (18-1) opened the Classic by winning a pair of games to win its three-team pool. The Trojans will play either No. 3 St. Luke’s or Falkville at 12:30 p.m. Friday.

In the first game, Zach Ivey pitched all seven innings in the Trojans’ 3-2 victory against Fayetteville that ABS coach Bill Murrell described as “a good pitchers’ game.”

Ivey struck out eight and scattered three hits and a walk, and did not allow an earned run.

Among ABS’ five hits, Jacob Hagewood had two singles and Carter Corneil and Cole Graviett each added a single. Bobo drove in two runs on a single and a sacrifice fly.

In the second game, Blake Cundiff did not allow a run and pitched four innings in relief to lead the Trojans past No. 7 Cedar Bluff 7-4.

Cundiff gave up one hit and three walks and fanned five. Graviett started the game, allowing one earned run in three innings.

Corneil led ABS with three singles, while Hagewood, Bobo and Cundiff all singled twice and Hayden Phillips and Douglas Fields had a single apiece.

Hagewood added a double, and Cundiff drove in two runs.

The Trojans play at Covenant Christian three times next week on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and a Friday doubleheader at Westminster Christian.

The Trojans will host archrival and top-ranked Shoals Christian at noon Monday, April 8. The Flame, the three-time 1A state champions, will host ABS at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9.
