WEST LIMESTONE — Former football players from Clements and West Limestone high schools will have the opportunity to suit up one more time for their respective schools when the teams meet for an alumni football game next month.

Alumni Football USA has partnered with alumni from both schools to organize a full-contact football game. The game will be no different from what you see Friday nights, except of course for the slight age difference.

“It’s catching on, a lot of people are interested,” said West Limestone graduate David Hughes. “It gives people one more time to play. A lot of people may have regrets about playing, or just want to their kids to see them play.”

This is more than just a pickup game. The teams have been practicing since June, with West players getting together twice a week for the past few weeks.

“We’re dead serious about it,” said West Limestone’s Marc Johnson. “We have some guys that played college ball. Most of the guys are in their 20s.”

After months of preparation, the teams will suit up at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at West Limestone High School for the first-ever Limestone County alumni football game.

Tickets can be purchased at either high school. Half of advance tickets proceeds goes directly to the schools while tickets purchased at the gate will go to Alumni Football USA. Tickets are $10 in advance.

Series history

Although this is the first alumni game, the two high schools have met on the gridiron 51 times since 1964. West Limestone holds a 28-23 advantage, and a 20-14 advantage dating back to 1980. The two schools have met every season dating back to that first meeting in ’64, playing twice in 1988 including a second-round playoff match.

Lately, it’s been a streaky series with West Limestone winning the past five games but Clements claiming the five contests before that. One of the best games in the rivalry came at Clements last year when West emerged victorious from a 54-53 four-overtime thriller.
