Local paratriathlete wins bronze

— A local athlete recently secured a bronze medal at the ITU Paratriathlon World Championships in Hyde Park, London.

David Kyle, an East Limestone native and a relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis patient, was able to secure a bronze in the TRI-3 event.

Although it rained most of day along the London 2012 Olympic triathlon course, Kyle finished with a time of 1:20:09.

He joined the ranks of two U.S. paratriathletes, who locked up two world titles, and secured one of 11 U.S. overall medals across seven divisions.

When Kyle isn’t training for his next triathlon, he can be found at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, where he is the senior associate director of health and physical education.

Kyle is also a devoted husband and father of three.

His journey with RRMS began in 2002 when he awoke one morning with numbness in his toes. As the weeks progressed, he eventually became paralyzed from the chest down. The symptoms subsided, but returned six months later. A diagnosis of RRMS was confirmed.

Kyle said he felt overwhelmed, and like many newly-diagnosed with RRMS, he started losing hope for the future. He realized his attitude was negatively affecting both him and his family’s life and began to rethink how to cope with his disease.

With the help of his doctor, Kyle began a treatment regimen. He decided to deal with his illness one step at a time and move forward with pursuing life-long goals, such as competing in the sport of triathlon.

Kyle began racing in triathlons in 2003.

“It snowballed,” Kyle said. “I’ve been competing at the international level since 2005.”

Kyle trains 100 percent locally, riding and running around his house in East Limestone. He also trains some on the UAH campus where he works.

He is currently the duathlon (run-bike-walk) world champion — a title he has held for the past two years. He is also ranked first in the U.S. for the triathlon and third in the world for triathlon after the London race.
