Hutchison steps down as AHS coach

— Less than a month after winning the school’s first state soccer championship, Athens head girls soccer coach, J.B. Hutchison is stepping down. Hutchison submitted his resignation at a school board meeting earlier this week.

Hutchison left the school to pursue a law degree at the University of Kentucky College of Law.

“This is something I’ve always wanted to do,” said Hutchison. “I’ve been thinking about it and praying on what to do. If we hadn’t won (the championship), it would have made my decision a little harder.”

Under Hutchison, Athens girls soccer team enjoyed unparalleled success in 5A over the past six years. AHS reached the state semifinals every year, finally winning the 5A state title earlier this month.

In six seasons as the girls soccer coach, Hutchison leaves with a 110-28-12 record including six area championships, six state tournament appearances and a state championship.

Before Hutchison, Athens had only reached the state tournament once, in 2007.

The Hazel Green native taught social sciences and served as an assistant basketball coach under Stace Tedford.

“I’ve enjoyed the experience of being part of this community and coaching these girls,” said Hutchison. “I look forward to hearing about their future success.”

AHS hires softball coach

Following the departure of Richard Johnson, Athens hired Travis Barnes as its new head softball coach at Tuesday’s school board meeting. Barnes was hired as a science teacher and will coach softball along with girls and boys cross-country at Athens High School.
