TANNER – In front of a packed crowd at Rip Swanner Field, Tanner kept its undefeated season alive by collecting 307 rushing yards in a 60-6 win against Hatton.
“Our offense line has been great all season,” said running back Hayden Stephens, who scored the first touchdown of the game on an 81 yard scamper. Frederick Rich closed out the first quarter with his own long touchdown run of 44 yards.
In the second quarter, Rattler’s quarterback Jonathan Fletcher scrambled down the Tanner sideline and leaped over a Hornet defender for a 14-yard touchdown. After blocking Hatton’s punt on the following possession, Fletcher connected with Greg Maclin for 37 yards and the score. Defensive back Sherwin Freeman then scored for the defense, intercepting Hatton quarterback Dakota Bishop at the 40-yard-line. Just before halftime, Stephens scored on a 23-yard run, putting his team up 39 – 0 at the break.
Opening the second half, Fletcher hooked up with Desmond Love on a 49-yard touchdown pass. After a quick three and out by the Rattler defense, Freeman coasted on a 72-yard punt return for a score.. Replacing Fletcher at quarterback, senior Justin Smith hammered his way from three yards to paydirt, putting the Rattlers up 60 –0.
In the closing seconds, Hatton freshman Bailey Logston put the Hornets on the board with a three-yard run.
Tanner’s defense force two turnovers and held Hatton to 56 total yards, all on the ground. Logston led the Hornets in rushing, gathering 37 yards on 8 carries and a touchdown. Stephens collected 159 yards and two touchdowns on 11 tries. Rich ran seven times for 90 yards and a score. Fletcher was efficient with his passing, completing five of his six attempts for 126 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried the ball one time for a 14 yard score. Maclin picked up 77 yards and a touchdown on four catches. Love caught one ball for 49 yards and a score.
Tanner (8-0) will travel to Phil Campbell (2-6) next Friday to finish out the regular season.
