Quiroz leads Wildcats at ABS Invite

The West Limestone boys cross-country team narrowly beat Athens to win the 4-6A boys race at the Athens Bible Invitational last week. The Golden Eagles had three runners place in the top 10, but West put four in the top 20 to claim the large-schools boys title.

Ramon Quiroz led the way for West, finishing third with a time of 17:43. Thomas Peek, Jacob Martin, Dylan Greene and Cody Farr were the Wildcats top five runners in the competition held at the Athens Sportsplex.

Athens’ Tate Carden had the best time at the meet with a 17:21 on the 5K course. Also finishing in the top 10 were Brock Jerkins and Andrew Sulcer, of Athens, and Fred Stephens, of East Limestone. The Indians finished 15th out of 15 teams in the large-schools boys race.

Another local runner, Elkmont’s Tyler Helms, had the top time in the 1A-3A boys race with 17:32, 10 seconds better than his closest competitor. Helms and Adam McMahan both finished in the top 10 to help the Red Devils to a third-place finish.

Three-time defending state champions, Hatton, won the small-schools race, while host, Athens Bible, finished second. Leading the way for Athens Bible was Ryan Crews, who finished fourth with a time of 18:02. Dalton Adams, Walton Purner and Will Crews all finished in the top 24 for ABS. Clements finished fifth behind Mack VanWagnen’s seventh-place finish.

In the 4A-6A girls race, Alison Jay finished second behind Shoals Christian’s Amy McKelvey. Jay’s 20:59 time was the best for a female from Limestone County. Clements finished eighth in the small-schools girls race, while ABS and Elkmont finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Top runners from Athens Bible were Anna Persell, Ashley Riggins and Rebecca Harwell. All finished in the top 30. Hannah Hanback was Elkmont’s top runner with a 10th-place finish.

West Limestone finished third in the large-schools girls race, led by Reilly Hooie, Brianna Burrow,  Rainey Tyler, who finished in the top 20 of Thursday’s race.

Section cross-country races will be held Nov. 3 for a chance to advance to the state race at the Oakville Indian Mounds, Nov. 10.

    Stace Tedford has had a busy year at Athens. After leading the basketball team to a school-record 24 consecutive wins and regional finals appearance, he jumped straight into soccer season, where he took the varsity girls soccer team to another 5A state championship game.
    Wednesday, Tedford will be on the court again, coaching in the North-South All-Star basketball game.
