ELKMONT — ELKMONT — Clements held off a late Ardmore rally Monday night to advance to the second round of the Limestone County Tournament. The Colts trailed at halftime, but pulled away for a 75-71 win.

Ardmore led by as many as nine points in the second quarter and led 39-31 at halftime. Clements stormed back in the third quarter, starting the second half on a 7-0 run.

“The first half, we allowed them to take us out of running our sets and we weren’t closing down their shooters.” said Clements head coach Brian Gafford. “We did a better job of closing them down in the second half.”

Trailing 69-66 with less than a minute to play, Ardmore’s Dylan Glover hit a 3-pointer near the Ardmore bench to tie the game with 44 seconds left. Carson Cook responded for Clements with a quick basket and was fouled.

Clements hit 14 of 19 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Gafford scored a game-high 18 points for Clements. The junior scored 16 points in the second half, including 6 for 6 from the line in the final quarter.

“Zero (Colton Gafford) was in foul trouble, and barely played in that first half,” said Gafford. “He made a difference in the game at the end.”

Lance Kephart and Cook each scored 17 points for the Colts.

For Ardmore, Zach Jones scored 17 and Brandon Jones added 15. Glover scored 15, all on 3-pointers.

Clements advanced to play East Limestone Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
