AHS girls team playing the state’s best

— A new area format for some high school soccer teams has allowed more flexibility in scheduling this spring. Previously, teams participating in the 6A classification were limited in how many non-section games they could play due to the eight-team section format.

The No. 1 ranked Athens girls team is taking advantage of a new area format by filling the schedule with some of the state’s best girls soccer teams. Already this season, AHS has played Huntsville, Oak Mountain, Vestavia Hills and Spain Park — all ranked in the top eight in Class 6A.

This definitely is the toughest schedule we’ve had,” said Athens head coach J.B. Hutchison. “It’s something we’re still sort of working through. It’s teaching us how to come together through playing teams like that. We’ve got to step up to the bar.”
