Rivals collide

Preview: Athens vs. East Limestone

ATHENS — Before area play gets underway next week, a pair of cross-county rivals have a score to settle entering the postseason. Athens and East Limestone’s boys basketball teams have already met twice this season with the Golden Eagles winning both games.

East will try to avoid a clean sweep from AHS when they travel to Athens tonight for the third installment of this 5A rivalry. Athens beat the Indians twice in a week’s time in late November thanks to big games from Nathaniel “Giddy” Potts.

Potts was a force the first time the teams met in a Columbia Tournament over Thanksgiving. The junior scored 29 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in a 55-54 win. Less than a week later, Potts had 21 points and 15 rebounds in a 65-50 win on the Indians’ home floor.

Potts promises to be a threat once again on Athens home floor tonight, but he isn’t the only Golden Eagle with a hot hand. As of late, Potts younger brother, Trey, has led the team in scoring as often as his brother.

Countering the Potts brothers will be East Limestone’s Jordan Gandy, who averages 20 points and seven rebounds per game. Gandy averaged 26 points per game in the two losses two Athens.

The girls game should be no-less entertaining with both teams getting hot at the end of the season. Athens recently moved into the top 10 of the ASWA poll while East is enjoying its best season in some time with a 20-6 record.

East Limestone held on for a 56-53 victory in their first and only meeting this year. Tonight’s rematch could be just as close. Athens and East Limestone’s girls team tip off at approximately 5 p.m. with the boys game to follow.
