Sports HOF golf tourney registration open

— The Limestone County Sports Hall of Fame will hold its annual golf tournament at Southern Gayles Golf Course next month. Proceeds from the four-man scramble go toward scholarships for Limestone County high school students.

The tournament is Friday, June 13, with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

Two $1,500 scholarships are awarded each year to Limestone students, who are honored at the annual banquet. This year’s banquet is Saturday, June 14, at Athens State.

“All the money we raise goes to scholarships for deserving athletes in Limestone County,” said board member Jeff Hodges. “With this year’s awards, we will have given $30,000 to local athletes.”

Registration for the golf tournament is $240 per team with more than $1,000 in cash prize money to be split between the top three teams at the tournament. Athens City Councilman Jimmy Gill will cook pulled pork to be served approximately two hours before the event.

The 2014 inductees were announced last month and include Hugo Bates, Daniel Carrell, Jimmy Elmore, David Hogan, Larry Keenum, James Nolan, Billy Owens and Paul Parker.
