COLUMN: A year to remember

Another Tanner title highlights the 2013-14 year in sports

— As school winds down this week in Alabama, it’s time to looks back at what happened during the 2013-14 year in sports. In what seems like an annual event, Tanner won another state championship.

Unlike previous years, the Rattlers won only one title this year. It was a big one, however. Tanner defended its 2A football title by coming from behind to beat Washington County 28-21 in Bryant-Denny Stadium back in December.

It was the third consecutive season with Tanner in the title game and second straight 2A state championship. The amount of Blue Map state championship trophies Tanner has racked up over the past three school years has become hard to keep up with.

Since March 1, 2011, the school has won no less than six state championships in three sports.

To commemorate Tanner’s remarkable run, the Limestone County school officials in December, designated the road leading to school as the “Road of Champions.”

While Tanner’s football championship was the only state title won by a team in Limestone County, they were by no means alone in their success.

Although there were no Blue Maps to add to the trophy case, Athens qualified for the playoffs in every sport. Not only did Athens compete in across the board, the Golden Eagles made deep playoff runs in basketball, football, softball and came just short of winning another girls soccer championship.

Athens had players make first-team All-State in football, basketball and will almost certainly be represented in soccer and softball.

Along with Athens girls soccer team, Athens Bible School and Ardmore’s baseball teams brought home runner-up trophies last week from Montgomery. ABS reached the 1A championship series for the first time since winning in 2008, while Ardmore made it there for the first time in school history.

Led by Cody Reed, the Tigers breezed through the 4A playoffs and won their opening game in the finals before losing back-to-back games in the series.

A few days later, Lee Hodges won the school’s first golf state title down the road in Prattville. Hodges was one of the few golfers in the state to shoot under par as the 4A individual state champion.

With three state runner-ups and another blue map at Tanner, the past nine months have been pretty good to Limestone County sports teams.
