One team hadn’t won county in eight years. The other sought revenge for two consecutive championship game losses, but both East Limestone basketball teams hoisted the Limestone County Championship trophy Saturday night.
East Limestone’s girls team knocked off defending champions Tanner 58-51 before the boys hung on to defeat two-time defending champs Tanner, 61-58.
In the boys final, East Limestone led by double-digits entering the fourth quarter before Tanner made a run led by Desmond Love and JonJon Fletcher. Love and Fletcher combined for 21 points in the fourth quarter to help Tanner tie the score with under two minutes to play.
East Limestone responded with some clutch free throw shooting and scrappy defense down the stretch, led by Jordan Gandy. Gandy scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Devin Davis had 11 points while Nick Walsh added 10.
Fletcher finished with 26 points and Desmond Love added 16 for Tanner.
Brennan Crabtree made sure the girls final never got that close. While Tanner made a late run, Crabtree converted 6 of 7 free throw attempts and scored 10 points in the final quarter to seal the win for East.
The senior finished with 24 points and is just six points from reaching 2,000 for her career. Rachel Diamond added 13 points for East Limestone.
Sydney Houston led Tanner with 18 points while Kirstin Brown added 15 in the loss.
