Area tournament seeds, sites set

— Four local boy’s teams and a pair of girl’s teams will host area basketball tournaments this week. Athens, East Limestone, Tanner and West Limestone’s boy’s teams won regular season area titles and earned the right to host their respective postseason tournaments.

Tanner and East Limestone are the girls’ team that will play area tournaments at home.

The luxury of playing an area tournament at home cannot be understated in scenario where every game could be your last. Along with having the home crowd, host teams have the luxury of not traveling and added revenue for the school.

No team will benefit more from playing at home than East Limestone where the boys and girls narrowly edged Cullman for the right to host both area tournaments.

“Anytime you can get that home court advantage, it helps,” said East Limestone boys’ coach Chad Drake. “The travel aspect of it; not having to drive to West Point or Cullman and we’re more relaxed at home.”

The 5A Area 15 Tournament came down to a coin flip after East Limestone split a pair of games with Cullman this season. The Indians won in 69-62 in OT at home before losing 85-70 at Cullman.

The East Limestone girl’s team is hosting an area tournament for the first time at least a decade. East finished area play undefeated (6-0) and will be the favorites from the group to advance.

East Limestone and Tanner will play the boy’s and girl’s area championships on the same night, Monday, Feb. 10. All other girl’s championship games will be played Saturday, with the first round beginning Thursday.

Boy’s tournaments begin Friday with championship games Monday.

The winners and runners-up from each area tournament will advance to the play sub-region game Thursday, Feb. 13 and Friday, Feb. 14.

Winners of sub-region games advance to the North Regional Tournament at Wallace State Community College, which begins Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Full schedules for Limestone County teams are below.
