Athens, Ardmore, East and Tanner advance to area finals

— East Limestone took a big step toward making it to the regional tournament at Wallace State with a 58-35 win over West Point Thursday. Brennan Crabtree poured in 22 points while Rachael Dimond added 15 in the win.

East Limestone advanced to the 5A Area 15 finals where they will hosts Cullman in the area championship. The winner will play the loser of Saturday’s Athens-Muscle Shoals game.

Athens 44

Lawrence County 36

Athens pulled away in the fourth quarter to advance to the 5A Area 16 finals and qualify for the sub-region round of the AHSAA playoffs. AHS advanced to play Muscle Shoals Saturday in the area finals. The results were not available at press time.

The winner of Saturday’s game will play the loser of Monday’s East Limestone-Cullman game in the sub-region round of the playoffs.

Tionna Moore scored 12 points to lead Athens.

Central 45

West Limestone 29

No. 7 West Limestone saw its season come to an abrupt end Thursday at the 4A Area 16 tournament held at Rogers. West was upset by Central 45-29 in the first round of the single elimination tournament. Only two teams can advance from an area.

West Limestone lost at Central 41-40 then won the return game 51-46 in early January.

Central advanced to play tournament host Rogers in the area championship.

West Morgan 54

Elkmont 29

Elkmont was eliminated from the 3A Area 15 Tournament at Madison Academy with a 54-29 loss to West Morgan. Bailey Gooch scored seven points in what was Elkmont’s final game of the season.

Lauderdale County 67

Clements 43

Channing Gafford scored 22 points for Clements, but it wasn’t enough against the No. 1 team in Class 3A. No. 1 Lauderdale remained undefeated and advanced to the 3A Area 16 championship game against Mars Hill.

Lele Anderson scored 11 points in a losing effort for Clements.

Hubbard 55

Athens Bible 44

Athens Bible saw its season come to end Thursday in the 1A Area 16 at Covenant Christian. Ashley Riggins scored a team-high 16 points for ABS while Anna Stinnett added 13.

R.A. Hubbard’s leading scorer was Ashlen McCoy with 19 points. Hubbard advanced to the area finals Saturday against Covenant Christian.
