No. 3 Athens sets school record with 22nd consecutive win

Tanner wins 15th consecutive area championship

— No. 3 Athens won its third consecutive area championship and set a school record on the same night Monday. The Golden Eagles knocked off Muscle Shoals 50-33 in the 5A Area 16 championship game to set a school record with 22nd consecutive victories.

Giddy Potts led the way for Athens with 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Jackson Pettus scored 12 points while Trey Potts chipped in 11 points and nine boards.

Athens blew open a close game in the fourth quarter after leading by no more than eight points through the first three quarters. Ismimeal Nance led Muscle Shoals with 18 points.

With the win, Athens will host East Limestone in a sub-region playoff game at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14. Muscle Shoals will travel to Cullman.
