Athens moves up in prep poll

— Athens boys basketball team made a move in the latest high school basketball poll, released Thursday afternoon by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

AHS beat then sixth-ranked Lawrence County Tuesday 62-28 to move into the top five in 5A. Athens is No. 5 behind No.1 Wenonah, Sumter Central, Parker and Faith Academy.

Athens (15-3) hosts Muscle Shoals tonight in an area contest.

Tanner (7-4) dropped to No. 7 in 2A boys. The Rattlers were ranked No. 1 before falling to East Limestone and dropping three games in the Yule Tide Classic over Christmas.

Tanner travels to Hatton tonight for an area game.

Athens girls team were ranked No. 9 in the latest 5A poll. AHS (12-5) has won three consecutive games, including a 50-49 area final Tuesday over Lawrence County. Athens hosts Muscle Shoals tonight.

Tanner is ranked No. 6 in 2A. The Lady Rattlers travel to Hatton for a pivotal area matchup Friday. Tanner defeated Hatton 48-41 earlier this year.
