County tournament schedule announced

— Twelve high school basketball teams will battle for the 2014 Limestone County Tournament beginning Monday, January 20 at Elkmont High School. The tournament will open with two games Monday and conclude Saturday, Jan. 25, with championship games.

This year is West Limestone’s year to host the tournament, but as they have done in the past, the games will be played at Elkmont High School, due to its gymnasium being much larger.

“It rolls around here pretty often,” said Elkmont Athletics Director Kenny Jordan. “Ardmore has the same issues as West Limestone, so we have it often. I’m sure it will help local restaurants and things.”

The tournament currently rotates between Clements, East Limestone, Elkmont and Tanner — the four newest facilities in the county. East Limestone hosted the tournament for the first time in 2012. Ardmore will be added to the rotation upon completion of its new gymnasium currently under construction.

Proceeds from the tournament are divided among the schools depending how many games their respective teams play in the tournament.

Tanner swept the tournament last season on its home floor. The girls knocked off five-time defending champion Clements 47-44 while Tanner’s boys team beat East Limestone 59-54.

Middle School games begin Saturday, Jan. 18, while the junior varsity and varsity tournament kicks off Monday. Here is the full varsity schedule for next week’s county tournament:
