Athens Police Reserves 4-man scramble is Friday

— The Athens Police Reserves 4-man Scramble Golf Tournament is set for tee off at Southern Gayles Golf Course Friday. The tournament begins at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start.

It’s not too late to participate. Anyone interested in helping the police department by spending an afternoon playing golf can check in for the tournament beginning at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the course.

“We’ve had six officers killed since the police department started that we know of,” said Athens police chief Floyd Johnson. “What we want to do is put flags at all the officers graves that have died. That is our goal.”

The money raised from the tournament will go toward honoring Athens police officers killed in the line of duty along with raising money for the Athens Police Reserves. Several prizes will be awarded Friday including closest to the flag, straight drive and a 2013 vehicle provided by Jimmy Smith Buick/GMC for hitting a hole-in-one.

The cost to play is $65 per person and $260 for a team. Individual golfers are welcome and will be paired with other players signing up as individuals.

“I’ve got several that are signed up as twos,” said Athens Police officer Jeff Gentilcore. “We’ll just go back and combine to make a full four-person team.”

Gentilcore said if weather is an issue, a rain date of Friday, May 3 has been planned. The Athens Police reserves work as volunteers to assists the Athens Police Department.

“Hopefully, if we keep doing these types of fundraisers, we will be able to get more equipment for the reserves,” said Gentilcore.
