Jags a big test for Ardmore

Ardmore is quietly off to its best start in more than four decades, but the lack of hype doesn’t bother first-year head coach Clint Legg.

“I try to remind them everyday — we’ve won five games, that’s it,” said Legg. “We’re trying to keep them focused. We got to 5-0 by working hard. And we’re still working out three days a week, working on fundamentals.”

The Tigers will need to be near-perfect Friday when they entertain a dangerous J.O. Johnson team.

“They’ve got a ton of speed and a huge offensive lineman,” said Legg. “Definitely the best in our region. Their quarterback and receivers are great.”

Quarterback Danny Johnson will take several shots over the top to brother DeVon to complement a solid ground game. On the other side of the ball, the Jags are giving up seven points per game this season.

“We’re going to do what we do,” said Legg. “We’re going to try and run the football. We’re going to try and run downhill at them and pass when we’ve got to.”

And Ardmore has been able to pass. As teams crowd the box to stop its ground game, quarterback Garrett Miller has taken advantage of the space provided by defenses.

“Guys like Garrett (Miller) and Dominic Clemmons are an example of players buying into the weight room,” said Legg. “It has given them confidence. Now they have that confidence playing out there.”

Miller threw a career-high five touchdown passes in last week’s 56-30 win over Clements while Clemmons has recorded an interception in three consecutive games.

Ardmore and J.O. Johnson kick off at 7 p.m. Friday in Ardmore.
