— After school today, the Athens Bible School volleyball team will be boarding a bus for the state volleyball Elite Eight finals.

The trip has become almost a tradition for the Lady Trojans – this is their 10th appearance in the state championship tournament in the last 16 seasons - and this year it took a strong effort for the No. 8-ranked team in Class 1A.

The Lady Trojans started slow Saturday, dropping the first set 25-20 to No. 6 Lynn, before taking the next three sets 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 to reach the North Super Regional semifinals and qualify for the trip to Birmingham. They lost in five sets to Meek in the semifinals.

“We knew we would have our hands full,” head coach April Davis said of the match with Lynn. “I’m very excited about this.”

The Lady Trojans will face South Super Regional champion Donoho at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the quarterfinals.

Davis, who is in her 16th season as coach, hasn’t seen Donoho play but said, “They’ve won the last two years. They’re a good, solid team – a volleyball dynasty.”

Her players, though, aren’t going to let that affect them, she said. And, she asks just one thing of the Lady Trojans.

“All I ask is we do our best,” Davis said. “Anything can happen.

“But, if we win or if we lose, as long as we do our best.”
