AHS girls headline 7 local teams heading to playoffs

— The Athens High girls soccer team is one of seven boys and girls soccer teams going to state playoffs. The defending state champions wrapped up section play Monday afternoon with a 4-0 win over Cullman.

Athens finishes section play with a perfect 6-0 record. It is the team's fourth consecutive season to go through section play undefeated. The Athens girls team has not lost an area game since 2010.

The No. 3-ranked Golden Eagles host the runner-up from 5A Section 7 in the first round on Tuesday, April 29.

Athens boys team will also host a first-round game and likely play Southside-Gadsden for the second consecutive season, following the girls game on Tuesday.

East Limestone boys and girls teams travel in the first round to play Fort Payne. Both games are Tuesday, April 29 beginning with the girls at 5 p.m. If Athens and East Limestone both win first-round games, Athens would host a second-round rematch between the two Saturday, May 3.

Other teams to make the playoffs include Athens Bible and Tanner boys, and West Limestone girls.

The 1A-4A playoffs begin Saturday. Tanner plays at 3 p.m. at Mars Hill while ABS travels to West Morgan for a  6:30 contest.

West Limestone travels to Randolph for a 4 p.m. kickoff.

4 teams ranked in final poll

Athens (14-6-1) girls finished the season as the top ranked Limestone team at No. 3 behind Briarwood and John Carroll. East Limestone (10-10-1) finished the season at No. 9.

Athens (14-7-3) was the top ranked boys team at No. 5. East Limestone (13-7-1) finished at No. 10. 

East Limestone’s first round opponent, Fort Payne, is ranked No. 5 in the girls poll and No. 2 in the boys poll.
