EAST LIMESTONE — Voters around the state have taken notice of Athens’ impressive 20-game winning streak. The Golden Eagles finished the regular season ranked No. 3 in Class 5A in the final ASWA basketball rankings, released Thursday.

Athens (23-3) began the season No. 8 after a 4-3 start and has not lost since. AHS is behind only Faith Academy and Wenonah. They could play the latter in the Regional tournament should both teams make it.

Cullman (21-7) entered the 5A poll at No. 10 and will travel to East Limestone for the 5A Area 15 tournament tonight. The teams split against one another this year.

Tanner’s boys team dropped from the rankings for the first time this season.

In the girls poll, West Limestone (17-8) finished No. 7 in 4A while Tanner (15-7) is No. 5 in Class 2A. Athens (16-9) and East Limestone (23-7) received votes in the 5A.
