Athens State University will host its second annual Athletic Homecoming Reception, honoring former sports programs at Athens College, Athens State College and Athens State University.

Coaches Larry Keenum (softball), Dr. Betty Jo Fuller (tennis, volleyball, golf), Dr. Al Long (tennis, gymnastics) and Tena Bullington (cheerleading) will be on hand to highlight the former women’s sports programs.

All former athletes, boosters, volunteers and family members are invited to attend. The reception will be at 4 p.m. July 27 in Carter Gymnasium.

“The 2012 Athletic Homecoming exceeded our expectations with over 150 attendees,” said Trish Di Lullo, director of Alumni Affairs. “Coaches Oba Belcher and Harold Murrell were posthumously honored for their years of service to the University last year, and the focus was on the men’s sports programs. This year we will focus on the women’s sports programs and the impact they made on the college.”

Housing items from every era and sports program, the ASU Sports Museum will be open during the reception for visitors to enjoy. Volunteers work every Tuesday morning to collect, inventory and identify memorabilia items for display.

Some of the items are on loan, while others were donated. Anyone with items from former sports programs at Athens College, Athens State College, or Athens State University are encouraged to contact Sara Love at 256-216-6671 to discuss displaying them in the museum.
