Athens beats Grissom in final regular season game

— The Athens soccer team knocked off one of the top teams in Class 6A in the final regular game of the season. Charlie Holland’s header in the sixth minute was enough for a 1-0 victory over Grissom Tuesday night.

Athens earned a corner kick five minutes into the game. Harper Ward’s kick found Holland on the edge of the six-yard box. The center defender jumped over a Grissom defender to score the game’s winner.

Athens came close to scoring another midway through the second half when William Mathews got past the Grissom defense, but his low shot was saved at the near post.

AHS put 11 behind the ball for the final moments of the game and held on for the 1-0 victory. Dean Bunnell had several key saves in goal for Athens.

No. 5 Athens will host Southside-Gadsden in a first-round playoff game Tuesday.

The No. 3-ranked Athens girls team tied 6A No. 7 Grissom 1-1 in a game played at Grissom Tuesday. Trailing 1-0, Riley Ridgeway connected with Kaitlyn Wise in the second half to tie the score.

Tiffany Dunaway had eight saves in goal for Athens.

Athens girls team hosts Southside-Gadsden in the first-round of the 5A playoffs beginning at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, followed by the boys at 7:30.


Ardmore secured the number one seed in the 4A Section 14 softball tournament with a 15-0 win over Pope John Paul II Catholic Tuesday.

Alexus Morrison was 2 for 2 to lead Ardmore. Savannah Whitt, Bailee Moore, Karla Hice and Stratton Hobbs all had hits for the Tigers. Meagen Green struck out six pitching.

Ardmore hosts the area tournament Thursday, May 1.

Athens wins Battle on the Border

Athens varsity softball team beat out 15 other teams to win the Battle on the Border Gold division over the weekend. Games were played at Ardmore High School and John Barnes Park.

Ardmore lost to Giles County, Tenn., to finish second in the Silver division.

    East Limestone’s Dilan Sayer scored the opening goal and was named MVP of the boys game in a 3-0 win while Jordan Runion scored her team’s opening goal in a 3-1 for the girls.

    She was one of only three North players to record a hit in the opener, which ended 3-3.
    Pitching duties were shared by Lexington’s Jessie Butler, Central-Florence’s Ashley Irons and Hartselle’s Jada Hayes along with eventual North MVP Maddie Moore of Winfield.

  • Tedford, Potts take on the South in All-Star hoops game

    Stace Tedford has had a busy year at Athens. After leading the basketball team to a school-record 24 consecutive wins and regional finals appearance, he jumped straight into soccer season, where he took the varsity girls soccer team to another 5A state championship game.
    Wednesday, Tedford will be on the court again, coaching in the North-South All-Star basketball game.
