East Limestone beats Fort Payne to set up rematch with No. 1 Athens

By Jonathan Deal

— East Limestone advanced to the second round of the 5A playoffs Tuesday with a 2-0 win at Fort Payne.

Chris Kenney and Dilan Sayer scored the goals for East, which advance to the second round for the third time in the past four years.

“I kind of felt like we would have played three hours and they still wouldn’t have scored on us,” said East Limestone coach Danny McConnell. “Chris Kenney was playing outstanding. The physical teams we’ve played in our area kind of helped us I think.”

Kenney, a team captain and center back, put East on the board from a corner kick in the opening 10 minutes of the game. Sayer gave East a two-goal lead less than two minutes after halftime when he scored on a breakaway.

No. 5 East Limestone (15-4-2) outshot No. 4 Fort Payne (18-8-3) 8-4. East goalie Wesley Swaim had four saves.

East Limestone will travel to No. 1 Athens Saturday for a chance to advance to the Final Four. Athens won the first two meetings, 1-0 and 2-0.

Kickoff from Athens is at 4 p.m.
