Fast takes: recapping Friday night's prep football action

— Muscle Shoals 42

East Limestone 7

East Limestone head coach Jeff Pugh said it was the best defense he’s ever coached against after Friday night’s loss to Muscle Shoals. The Trojans offense isn’t too shabby, either. Running back Jamarcus Nance had 229 total yards and two touchdowns. The senior is just one of many Muscle Shoals players with the speed to outrun opposing defenses.

Ardmore 38

Pope John Paul II 14

Ardmore remained undefeated on its home field with a 24-point win over Pope John Paul II. The Tigers used the same formula they have all season: Run the football and stop the run. Ardmore outgained the Falcons 303 to 20 yards on the ground.

Elkmont 24

Clements 8

A young Elkmont team picked up its second win of the season at Clements in a Class 3A Region 8 game. Elkmont used a combination of running backs to put away the Colts on their home field. In all, Elkmont rushed for more than 200 yards as a team.

Tanner 46

Sheffield 20

The 26-point win was Tanner’s closest region game this season, but it was actually not as close as the scoreboard indicated. The Rattlers led 27-0 at halftime and rushed for a season-high 442 yards.

Rogers 21

West Limestone 19

West Limestone was a two-point conversion away from forcing overtime against Rogers Friday. Instead the Pirates stole a much needed region win. The Wildcats must now win out and get some help if they are to make the postseason.

Russellville 23

Athens 7

Athens took an early 7-0 lead, but could not hold off Russellville at Tigers Stadium. The loss eliminated Athens from the playoff picture. Russellville can clinch the final spot in Class 5A Region 8 with a win over Lawrence County and an East Limestone loss at Hartselle Friday.

By the numbers:

5

Limestone County teams will play as many as five ranked teams this week, according to the latest ASWA poll. Throw in Tanner and you’ve got six ranked teams in action Friday, among Limestone County’s seven football teams.

25

Consecutive region wins by Tanner, now a state record. With Elba’s 26-21 loss to Luverne Friday, Tanner now holds the record for consecutive region wins.

4

Games with at least 300 yards rushing for Ardmore. The Tigers have already rushed for more yards than many Limestone County teams will all season.
