LIMESTONE COUNTY TOURNAMENT: East advances to play Tanner in girls championship game

ELKMONT — Jay Johnson set the tone with a 3-pointer 22 seconds into the game and East Limestone never let up. East hit five 3-pointers in a 66-48 victory over 4A No. 7 West Limestone.

Brennan Crabtree led the way for East with 25 points, including 17 in the first half. The senior is just 26 points away from reaching 2,000 for her career.

East led 9-0 before West Limestone got on board after nearly three minutes into the game. After the Indians took a 14-3 lead, Olivia Blankenship led West back with some sharp shooting from the 3-point line.

Blakenship’s pair of threes pulled West within one possession, but that was as close as they would come in the first half as East Limestone took a 31-24 lead into the break.

Crabtree’s 3-pointer just before the buzzer sounded gave East a cushion they used to extend the lead to double digits in the opening minutes of the third quarter.

The Indians began a full-court press in the third quarter that West struggled to keep up with. East Limestone led 49-35 after three quarters and cruised into Saturday’s championship game.

Kayla Carter led West Limestone with 24 points. Johnson added 13 points for East Limestone.

West Limestone won the first meeting this season 40-31. The teams will play Tuesday, Jan. 28 at West Limestone in another regular season matchup.

East Limestone advanced to the county championship where they will play Tanner Saturday at 6 p.m. for the 2014 Limestone County Championship.
