Athens, East meet tonight on hard court

— In a game previously scheduled for mid-November, Athens and East Limestone will meet on the hard court tonight in Capshaw. The basketball rivalry begins with the girls game at 5:30 p.m. followed by a highly anticipated boys game featuring two of North Alabama’s best players.

Athens Nathanial “Giddy” Potts and East Limestone’s Jordon Gandy have played in some classic games over the past few seasons. The next installment of the rivalry will tip off tonight at East Limestone.

“I know the guys have had this one circled after losing to them three times last year,” said East Limestone head coach Chad Drake. “It should be another good game.”

The game was postponed after Athens football team made a deep run into the playoffs last month and has been squeezed into a busy week for both teams.

Athens played at Hartselle Monday after press time and will travel to Moulton to begin area play Friday against Lawrence County.

East Limestone hosted Clements Monday and will host Cullman Friday for a 5A Area 15 contest. East Limestone’s boys and girls teams opened area play with wins over West Point last week.

Athens girls team defeated Hatton 62-33 Friday. The AHS boys team lost its opening game against Buckhorn 52-52 in the Columbia Classic Tournament played last week.
