Wildcats remain in playoff hunt

Greenhill — West Limestone’s Tucker McCormick did everything he could to keep the Wildcats in playoff contention Friday night.

The senior running back stole the show, as West Limestone held off a feisty Rogers team, 32-9 for a critical road region victory.

McCormick was the story of the night, as the senior rushed for 133 yards and three touchdowns while also returning an interception 42 yards for a touchdown, a critical blow in the third quarter that changed the face of the game.

The winless Pirates put up a gallant fight through three quarters but the Wildcats (5-2, 3-2) pulled away in the fourth quarter.

The two teams traded punts and turnovers early on, before West Limestone got on the board with a 21-yard touchdown run off left tackle by McCormick with 5:57 to play in the first half. The 2-point conversion attempt failed, giving the Wildcats a 6-0 lead.

Rogers answered to tie the game at 6-6 when quarterback Wes Black hit Alex Harper on a slant over the middle for an 11-yard touchdown.

McCormick turned the tide of the game in the third quarter with his interception and the ensuing return for a touchdown put the Wildcats up 12-6.

After a Rogers field goal, West Limestone responded with a 4-yard touchdown run by Dillon Miller and a two-point conversion pass to Reed Blankenship to take a 20-9 lead into the fourth quarter. Touchdown runs of 8 and 33 yards by McCormick against a clearly exhausted Pirates defense sealed the victory.
