Ardmore, Athens, West hit the road in the first round of the playoffs

— There is still one week left in the regular season, but most high school football teams across the state know the path to the Super Six in Tuscaloosa after finishing the region slate last week.

When the dust settled Friday, four Limestone teams finished in the top four of the region and will play in the postseason next month.

Ardmore, Athens, Tanner and West Limestone will begin their quest for a Blue Map Nov. 9 in the first round of Alabama’s high school football playoffs.

Tanner (8-1, 7-0) is the only team staying home in the first round. The Rattlers will host Woodland (5-4, 4-3) at Rip Swanner Field. Woodland finished fourth in 2A Region 6 after defeating Vincent 45-26 last week.

Ardmore, Athens and West all finished fourth in their respective regions and will have to travel to region champions in the first week.

Athens (5-3, 4-3) hits the road to face the 5A Region 6 champions, Center Point (8-1, 6-1). The default Region 6 champs, Walker, were disqualified from postseason play after receiving a ban from the AHSAA for an altercation with Cullman during the opening game of the season.

If AHS can beat No. 8 Center Point, the Golden Eagles would play the winner of Etowah (7-2, 5-2) and Pleasant Grove (8-1, 6-1).

Ardmore (6-3, 4-3) will travel to the 4A Region 5 champion, Mumford (8-1, 7-0). The winner of that game will play the winner of Brooks and Guntersville in the second round.

West Limestone’s last-second defeat to Haleyville means the Lions are the region champions and a fourth-place finish for West. The Wildcats travel to 4A No. 5 Oneonta (8-1, 7-0) in the first round. West Limestone’s second-round opponent is the winner of the D.A.R.-Jacksonville game.

Tanner will play the winner of North Sand Mountain and Reeltown in the second round.
