— The street leading to Tanner High School will soon have a new name to honor the high school’s recent athletic achievements.

Dr. Tom Sisk, superintendent of Limestone County Schools, requested that the County Commission designate the roadway leading to Tanner High School as the “Road of Champions.”

Tanner has won five state championships in football, boys basketball, boys track and girls basketball in Class 2A since February 2011. The top-ranked Rattlers football team is seeking its second straight state title this season.

During Monday’s commission meeting, Commissioners Gary Daly, Steve Turner, Bill Latimer and Ben Harrison unanimously approved Sisk’s request to assign the designation to Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road from the railroad bridge to Sommers Road.

Commission Chairman Stanley Menefee said the county’s Engineering Department would provide the commemorative sign. He said it might be installed near the north side of Tanner’s campus.

“We’ll have a ceremony in the school gym, but we’re not changing the name of the road,” Menefee said. “We’re just designating it as the home of championship teams. We’re planning to have a program and then pull the cover off the sign.”

County school officials said a ceremony is pending but the date will not be determined until after the school system’s three football playoff teams — Ardmore, Tanner and West Limestone — have ended their postseasons.

Remarkable run

Tanner’s current run is one of the best in the history of Alabama high school athletics. The championship tear began in February 2011 when the boys and girls basketball teams were awarded championship trophies at the BJCC.

The Rattlers football team followed that up with its first state championship in 2012 after reaching the title game for the first time in 2011. The boys track and field teams then won its first state title in 2012. The boys basketball team won the school’s fifth state championship in February 2013.

Tanner’s football team currently holds the state record for consecutive region victories after winning their 35th straight Region 8 game two weeks ago against Phil Campbell.
