East Limestone at Cullman

7 p.m., Woodard Stadium

Preview: East Limestone travels to Cullman, fresh off making national news from a postgame brawl at Walker. Lost in all the hoopla was the fact that Cullman came back to win the game 13-10. East lost on a last second field goal against Madison County. The Indians made some big plays, but gave a lot yards through the air. That could be the story again against a Bearcat team that likes to pass.                           

Series history: Cullman 1-0

Last year: Cullman won 30-21

News Courier prediction: East Limestone 24, Cullman 21

Elkmont at Colbert County

7 p.m., Golden Eagle Stadium

Preview: These teams have traded shutouts for the past three seasons with the visiting teams leaving with big wins in those games. If Elkmont is going to leave Leighton with a win, the Red Devils will need more of the big plays they scored on against Ardmore last week.

Series history: Colbert County 15-6

Last year: Colbert County won 32-0

News Courier prediction: Colbert County 27, Elkmont 6

West Limestone at Brooks

7 p.m., E.D. Redding Stadium

Preview: West will have plenty of confidence after dismantling rival Clements in its opening game. The Wildcats will find out what they are made of against a Brooks team that made it to the 4th round of the 4A playoffs last season. This has been a high-scoring game the past three seasons. The teams have combined for an average of 68 points in those games.

Series history: Brooks leads 12-1

Last year: Brooks won 54-7

News Courier prediction: Brooks 35, West Limestone 27

Thursday, Sept. 5

Ardmore at Butler

7 p.m., Milton Frank Stadium


Preview: Ardmore is trying to get to 2-0 for the second consecutive season when the Tigers travel to Huntsville for the region opener for both teams Friday. Butler dropped their home opener to Section 27-12 while Ardmore won comfortably over Elkmont.

Series history: Ardmore leads 1-0

Last year: Ardmore won 45-21

  • Local athletes lead North to soccer sweep

    East Limestone’s Dilan Sayer scored the opening goal and was named MVP of the boys game in a 3-0 win while Jordan Runion scored her team’s opening goal in a 3-1 for the girls.

  • Davidson helps North tie

    She was one of only three North players to record a hit in the opener, which ended 3-3.
    Pitching duties were shared by Lexington’s Jessie Butler, Central-Florence’s Ashley Irons and Hartselle’s Jada Hayes along with eventual North MVP Maddie Moore of Winfield.

  • Tedford, Potts take on the South in All-Star hoops game

    Stace Tedford has had a busy year at Athens. After leading the basketball team to a school-record 24 consecutive wins and regional finals appearance, he jumped straight into soccer season, where he took the varsity girls soccer team to another 5A state championship game.
    Wednesday, Tedford will be on the court again, coaching in the North-South All-Star basketball game.

    Belle Chevre Creamery will hosts the first annual ‘Running with the Goats’ Saturday in downtown Elkmont. The event will feature a 10K, 5K and fun run on the certified Rails to Trails course.
