Athens may be carrying a 23-game winning streak into today’s regional semifinals at Wallace State, but you wouldn’t know it. Athens coaches and players are more concerned about a different number: 4.
That’s how many games they must win for a state championship.
UPDATE: Baker named interim football coach at Clements
Cade Baker, an assistant principal at Blue Springs Elementary School, will lead the Clements High School football program through spring drills while a search remains underway to find the Colts' permanent head coach.
Athens, East wrap up wrestling season
Athens and East Limestone sent 11 wrestlers to the state meet over the weekend at the Von Braun Center. No local wrestlers medaled. Athens’ Thomas Carter came closest after narrowly losing in the consolation finals.

Limestone teams face tough road to Final 48
The team that emerges a winner from Saturday’s sub-region game between No. 3 Athens and East Limestone will have a tough road to the Final 48 State Tournament. It will most likely face No. 2 ranked Wenonah in the first round of the North Regional at Wallace State Community College.
That potential game would be played at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, in Hanceville. Two other ranked teams — No. 10 Cullman and No. 6 Parker are also in the North Regional.
Sub-regional games delayed
The winter storm postponed all of Thursday's local basketball sub-regional games and also pushed back one of Friday's key matchups.
Tanner sweeps Lexington for Area 15 hoop titles
Both Tanner teams will host the sub-regional round later this week. The girls (18-7) play Colbert Heights (10-15) on Thursday, while the boys (16-8) face Cherokee on Friday.
