    Ask anyone who knew Carrel Daniel what kind of player he was and the first few words will probably include “fast” and “quick.”

  • Elmore joins father and brother in HOF

    Jimmy Elmore only played one football season at Athens High School, but the standout quarterback from a famous football family made it a good one. Elmore did it all his senior season at AHS, lettering in three sports while making the All-Tennessee Valley Conference team in football and basketball.
    The eldest son of 2005 HOF inductee Ferman Elmore, Jimmy will join his dad and brother, Jerry, in the Limestone County Sports Hall of Fame Saturday.

  • Paul Parker004.jpg LIMESTONE COUNTY SPORTS HALL OF FAME: Parker carried first undefeated Athens football team

    Athens High School won back-to-back football state championships in 1975-76. The foundation for those teams began three years earlier with the school’s first undefeated team in 1972.
    One of the pillars of that team was All-State running back Paul Parker, who will be inducted into the Limestone County Sports Hall of Fame Saturday as part of the 2014 Class.

  • dadcropped.jpg LIMESTONE COUNTY SPORTS HALL OF FAME: James Nolan one of Trinity’s best

    Whenever old-timers get together to talk about Trinity football, one of the first names to surface is usually the late James Nolan.
    At 5-feet, 11-inches, 195 pounds, Nolan was a force to be reckoned with as a running back at Trinity High School in the early 1950s.
    On Saturday, Nolan will be posthumously honored as one of eight Limestone County Sports Hall of Fame inductees in the 2014 class.
    A three-year starter, Nolan racked up more than 30 touchdowns during his Trinity High School career. Several teammates and friends remember the bruising runner.

  • LIMESTONE COUNTY SPORTS HALL OF FAME: “Bubble Gum Man” familiar to all

    If you mention “Bubble Gum Man” around anyone who’s attended an Athens athletic event over the past 40 years, chances are, they’ll know who you mean.
    Hugo Bates, the man behind that iconic nickname, will be inducted into the Limestone County Sports Hall of Fame Saturday for more than four decades of service to the Athens athletic and band programs.

    A native of Glasgow, Kentucky, Billy Owens moved to Limestone County in 1976 after receiving a basketball scholarship to Athens State University. After spending a year playing junior college ball in Tampa, Florida, Owens was convinced by his former teammates to visit Athens State, an emerging NAIA school.

  • Keenum took ASU softball to the top

    If you didn’t watch Athens State softball when it was around or know someone that played, you might never come across it in the history books. They never won any national championships and were around for just over a decade.

  • Honors keep rolling in for Reed

    It’s been a good couple of days for Cody Reed. Since Thursday, the Ardmore pitching ace has been drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks, named Alabama High School 4A Player of the Year and selected to first-team All-State.
    All that coming a week after celebrating his 18th birthday and graduating high school.

  • AHS seniors selected to 5A All-State softball team

    Two Athens players were selected to the Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State Softball team, announced over the weekend. Brianna Caldwell was selected the Class 5A first-team while teammate Chelsey Abernathy was an honorable mention selection.

  • 4 local players make All-State baseball team

    While Cody Reed might dominate high school baseball’s post-season awards, there were other standouts in Limestone County this year. Along with Reed, East Limestone and Athens Bible placed players on the Alabama Sports Writers All-State teams, announced over the weekend.
