Limestone teams face tough road to Final 48
The team that emerges a winner from Saturday’s sub-region game between No. 3 Athens and East Limestone will have a tough road to the Final 48 State Tournament. It will most likely face No. 2 ranked Wenonah in the first round of the North Regional at Wallace State Community College.
That potential game would be played at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, in Hanceville. Two other ranked teams — No. 10 Cullman and No. 6 Parker are also in the North Regional.
Sub-regional games delayed
The winter storm postponed all of Thursday's local basketball sub-regional games and also pushed back one of Friday's key matchups.
Tanner sweeps Lexington for Area 15 hoop titles
Both Tanner teams will host the sub-regional round later this week. The girls (18-7) play Colbert Heights (10-15) on Thursday, while the boys (16-8) face Cherokee on Friday.
No. 3 Athens sets school record with 22nd consecutive win
No. 3 Athens won its third consecutive area championship and set a school record on the same night Monday. The Golden Eagles knocked off Muscle Shoals 50-33 in the 5A Area 16 championship game to set a school record with 22nd consecutive victories.
Cullman outlasts East Limestone in double OT for area championship
Cullman and East Limestone could have played all night and nobody would have complained. They nearly did, in a double-overtime thriller in which Cullman emerged the winner by the narrowest margins.
