Honors keep rolling in for Reed
It’s been a good couple of days for Cody Reed. Since Thursday, the Ardmore pitching ace has been drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks, named Alabama High School 4A Player of the Year and selected to first-team All-State.
All that coming a week after celebrating his 18th birthday and graduating high school.
AHS seniors selected to 5A All-State softball team
Two Athens players were selected to the Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State Softball team, announced over the weekend. Brianna Caldwell was selected the Class 5A first-team while teammate Chelsey Abernathy was an honorable mention selection.
4 local players make All-State baseball team
While Cody Reed might dominate high school baseball’s post-season awards, there were other standouts in Limestone County this year. Along with Reed, East Limestone and Athens Bible placed players on the Alabama Sports Writers All-State teams, announced over the weekend.

In a span of nine days, the 6-foot-3-inch, 245-pound lefty received his high school diploma, celebrated his 18th birthday and watched his name flash across the screen during the Major League Baseball draft.

West opens its season against defending Class 2A state champion Tanner at home on Aug. 22. The 4A Wildcats will play at East Limestone Aug. 28, and at home against Deshler on Sept. 5 in the Region 8 opener.

A quarterback named Rivers could be suiting up in Nashville this fall. It won’t be San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, returning to play the Titans, but rather his younger brother, Stephen.

Biking for a cure
The fifth annual Bike MS returns to Athens Saturday and, with it, a local ultra endurance world champion.
Athens native and current East Limestone resident David Kyle has won competitions all over the world. He has competed in more than 50 multi-sport events, including triathlons, duathlons and XTERRA off-road triathlons. In 2013 alone, Kyle placed first in triathlon or duathlon events in California, Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona and Canada.
