Ink Slingers prepping to pen novels

— During the next few months, budding novelists will receive a boost through a local writers group known as the Ink Slingers.

The group will meet from 2-4 p.m. on Saturdays at the Athens-Limestone Public Library to assist writers with crafting novels in preparation for November’s National Novel Writing Month.

“Beginning Saturday, Oct. 5, the Ink Slingers will gather to flex their writing muscles and get prepared to write their novel,” said Library Director Paula Laurita. “They cannot write your novel for you, but the library will help by gathering resources and discussing characters, settings, plot and other story essentials.”

Laurita said the library is an ideal site for writers to get their creative juices flowing and collaborate with aspiring authors.

“Local writers are always on the lookout for a good place to write, and the library is a great hub for teens and adults to gather, discuss their work and, of course, produce that one-month novel,” Laurita said.

The program is designed to emphasize creativity and adventure over creating a literary masterpiece, Laurita said.

She said more than 90 novels begun during the national writing month have become published, including New York Times bestsellers “Water for Elephants” by Sara Gruen and “The Night Circus” by Erin Morgenstern.

Writing sessions will be held through December, and there is no charge for the program.

The library is at 405 E. South Street, adjacent to Julian Newman Elementary School. For more information, call 256-232-1233.
