Motorcyclist loses game of chicken with Limestone deputy

A Madison motorcyclist ultimately lost a game of chicken Tuesday when he intentionally drove into a Limestone County deputy’s patrol car on Old Highway 20 and was arrested, an official said.

Allen Michael Martin, 18, of 26150 Newby Road is being held in the Limestone County Jail on 17 charges ranging from second-degree assault for injuring the deputy to carrying brass knuckles, records show.

The deputy, Brent Burroughs, 25, of Athens, “jammed his hand,” said Sheriff Mike Blakely, “but he’s OK.”

Burroughs was treated at Athens-Limestone Hospital and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

After leading Limestone County deputies on a 30-minute chase at speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour, according to emergency radio transmissions, Martin was subdued at 9:54 p.m. after colliding with Burroughs’ car.

“An officer had chased the motorcycle down Huntsville-Browns Ferry Road and lost him,” Blakely said Wednesday. “Another officer spotted him on Powell Road, north of Greenbrier, and when he tried to stop him, he (Martin) sped away at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. He turned, going west on Old 20 from Greenbrier, and another officer was on the east end of Old 20 ahead of the chase. He turned on his blue lights and the motorcycle turned around and headed west. Burroughs was headed east and he slowed to 20 to 30 mph. He saw the motorcycle in his lane, so he swerved into the other lane to avoid him but the motorcycle swerved into that lane and struck the car on the driver’s side.”

After wrecking, Miller, who was not injured, got up and tried to get back on his motorcycle and get away but was apprehended by officers, the sheriff said.

“He told us he was playing chicken,” Blakely said.

The patrol car is probably a total loss, the sheriff said. “It has a 2005 and it has 140,000 miles on it but it was in pretty good shape, Blakely said. But it’s probably going to cost more to fix it that it is worth. That’s one bad thing because we are kind of in a crunch for vehicles.

Martin is being held in the Limestone County Jail on $15,250 bond on charges of second-degree assault, two counts of reckless endangerment, two counts of attempting to elude, two counts of speeding, two counts of improper lane use, two counts of running a stop sign, two counts of having no tag, reckless driving, driving on the wrong side of the road, failing to signal and carrying brass knuckles.
