VVA yard sale

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 511 will host a yard sale from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the post at 17915 W. Elm St. Spaces available on the south side of building; pay at setup. Coffee and doughnuts available. No table and chairs provided.

Used book sale

The Friends of Athens-Limestone Public Library will hold a used book sale from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at the library, 405 E. South St. More information: 256-232-1233.

VVA Turkey & Ham Shoot

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 511 will sponsor a turkey/ham/prize shoot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the post at 17915 W. Elm St. Proceeds go for building and grounds maintenance.

Swamp John’s fundraiser

Owens Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a Swamp John’s fish dinner from 4-7 p.m. Saturday at the Limestone Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena. A $10 plate includes fish, chicken and/or shrimp, fries, slaw, hushpuppies and drink. Tickets available from any fire department member or at the door.

North Border breakfast

North Border Lodge No. 391 will sponsor a community breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. Saturday at the lodge on Salem Field Road. The public is invited. More information: 256-232-2335.

Pancake breakfast

West Limestone Band Boosters will hold a pancake breakfast 8-10 a.m. Saturday at Applebee’s on U.S. 72. Tickets are $5 and available from any West Limestone band member or booster. Proceeds benefit the band.

Coffee Call

The Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives Coffee Call is 8-9 a.m. Saturday at 100 W. Pryor St. Athens Masonic Lodge No. 16 is the sponsor.

Home and Garden Show

The Limestone County Home and Garden Show is at from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 1-2, at Limestone County Event Center. No admission fee. Demonstrations, children’s activities, register for door prizes.

SUNDAY

Free Family Concert

The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra will perform “Peter and the Wolf” at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Beasley Center of First United Methodist Church. Admission is free.

Gospel singing

Vietnam Veterans of America, chapter 511 is hosting a free gospel singing from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at 17915 W. Elm St. in Athens. Attendees are asked to bring canned goods for the Limestone Food Bank. More information: 256-233-5549 or 206-5399.

Epilepsy fundraiser

The North Alabama awareness group for the Epilepsy Foundation is holding a fundraiser from 4-10 p.m. Monday at the IHOP in Athens. Proceeds benefit the Epilepsy Foundation of Alabama.

TUESDAY

Mardi Gras parade

The third annual Athens Mardi Gras parade begins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in front of Athens State’s Center for Lifelong Learning on the downtown Square. Children and adults can string beads at 5:30 p.m. Beads provided for throwing. Mardi Gras costumes encouraged. No fee to participate. Participants should gather at the corner of Washington and Marion streets by 6:15 p.m. for lineup.

Kindergarten registration

Registration for 2014-15 Athens City Schools kindergarten will be from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the individual elementary schools during the week of March 3-7. See www.acs-k13.org for registration requirements.

Cleanup volunteers needed

Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful seeks volunteers for a cleanup of the Elk River Canoe & Kayak Trail and surrounding land areas to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, March 8. Lunch and bottled water provided. Swamp John’s supper

Tickets are available at $10 each for the City of Athens Relay for Life Team’s Swamp John’s supper to be held 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 11 at Athens Senior Center, 912 W. Pryor St. Meal will be shrimp, fish, chicken or a combo with sides and tea. Proceeds benefit American Cancer Society and local cancer patients. Tickets: 256-233-8730.

Women’s History Month

March is National Women’s History Month, and this year the Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives in Athens will present “Celebrating Women of Character, Courage & Commitment,” a celebration of women in the Vietnam War. • Soil and Water board. The Limestone County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 3, at the Tennessee Valley Agricultural Experiment Station, 9494 Experimental Loop, Belle Mina. The public is invited.

• AHS Class of ’56. Athens High School Class of 1956 and friends will meet for a Dutch-treat lunch at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, at The Fish Creel in Anderson. More information: Don 256-232-3895.
