Barbecue fundraiser

A benefit to help cover medical expenses for Jeal Hill will be Saturday at Village Mart, corner of Alabama 99 and Elk River Mills Road. Barbecue chicken plates with potato salad, baked beans and bread are $5 and available at 11 a.m. For preorders or pick up call 256-230-5397 or 710-1872.

Voter education program

A voter education program, presented by the Limestone NAACP, will be held noon until 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the NAACP office, 17308 U.S. 72 West. Topics will include voter registration, the importance of voting and getting out to vote.

EHS Class of '69 picnic

The Elkmont High School Class of 1969 Summer of Peace and Love Picnic is Saturday at Elkmont Rural Village Picnic Pavilion. Fellowship and lunch at noon. Elkmont classes of '68 and '70 are also invited. More information: deputyking@aol.com or 256-584-7001.

Confederate Memorial Day

Sons of Confederate Veterans, Capt. Thomas H. Hobbs Camp 768, is inviting the public to a Confederal Memorial Day service at 2 p.m. Sunday at Confederates' Circle in Athens City Cemetery. Local author Jerry Barksdale will speak.

Spencer Black Fun Run

Registration is underway for the fourth annual Spencer Black 5K and 1-mile Fun Run set for 8:30 a.m. May 10 at Blue Springs Elementary School, 17687 Hardy Road at U.S. 72 West. Earth Day fundraiser

Dan Tera on South Jefferson Street is selling “Light the Way” candles for $12 each in honor of Earth Day. Proceeds go to The Global Greengrants Fund to help provide clean water worldwide. Raffle tickets at $6 each are also available for a hair and body products basket and Dan Tera gift card. Winning ticket drawn April 26.
