Flag disposal ceremony

A “dignified disposal of unserviceable American flags ceremony” will be at 6 p.m. Friday at American Legion Post 49, 124 Cloverleaf Drive in Athens. The public is invited. Citizens may bring unserviceable American flags to the Post that evening for proper disposal at a later date. More information: Joe Johnson 256-233-5256.

Sam Gibbons horse show

The third annual Sam Gibbons Memorial Walking Horse Show is 5 p.m. Saturday at the Sheriff's Rodeo Arena off Alabama 99. Free admission. Donations welcome. Concessions and stadium seating available. More information:  Alabama Veterans Museum and Archives at 256-771-7578.

Chicken stew

The American Legion Post 49 monthly chicken stew will be held 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tuesday. Cost is $5 with one dessert to eat in or for per quart carryouts or delivery. Containers provided. No sides with carryouts. Free delivery to offices or job sites within Athens city limits. More information or to reserve carryouts: 256-230-6233.

Spaghetti dinner fundraiser

Vietnam Veterans of America, chapter 511, will hold an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner scholarship fundraiser from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the VVA building, 17915 W. Elm St. The $7 meal includes spaghetti, garlic toast, salad, dessert and drink. Take out or eat in. 2014 scholarship winners are Micah Still of Lindsay Lane Christian Academy and Kelsey Maclin of Athens High School. More information: 256-206-5399.

VFW fundraiser

The VFW post on North Jefferson Street in Athens is accepting donations until June 18 for its annual yard-sale fundraiser June 21. To have items picked up call 256-1-919-1032 or 256-431-7397.

Owens VFD fundraiser

Owens Volunteer Fire Department is conducting a door-to-door fund/picture drive for the next seven weeks. Proceeds go to upgrade equipment.

VVA Music Night

Listen and dance to '40s through '70s music from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at Chapter 511 of the Vietnam Veterans of America, 17915 W. Elm St. Finger foods encouraged. More information: 256-206-5399.
