Food giveaway

Anyone in need may pick up two pounds of beans and three pounds of rice from 9-11 a.m. today at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 207 E. Washington Street. No questions asked. No names taken.

4 Paws and a Book

4 Paws and a Book, a program dedicated to improve reading skills of children ages 5 and older is 9-10:30 a.m. today at the Houston Memorial Library. Children may bring their own book or read a favorite of Miss Sophie Grey, a Yorkshire terrier and a registered R.E.A.D. dog. To schedule a time to read, call the library at 256-233-8770.

Corporate Spelling Bee

The 19th annual Corporate Spelling Bee is at 10 a.m. today in the Athens High School cafeteria. Free admission to spectators. Refreshments served. More information: Learn to Read Council 256-230-3050.

Republican meet and greet

A Limestone Country Republican Party meet and greet for local Republican candidates is 6-8:30 p.m. today at the Athens State University ballroom. Each candidate will speak for two minutes. Desserts, coffee and tea will be served.

Celtic band concert

A concert by Henri’s Notions, regarded by some as the South’s premier Celtic band, is set for 7 p.m. Monday in the Athens State University Sandridge Student Center ballroom. The event is free to the public. No reservations required.

Chicken stew

The American Legion Post 49 monthly chicken stew will be held from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tuesday. Cost is $5 to eat in or for per quart carryouts. Containers provided. No sides with carryouts. More information or to reserve carryouts: 256-230-6233.

Blood drive

Spaghetti dinner fundraiser

Vietnam Veterans of America, chapter 511, will hold an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the VVA building, 17915 W. Elm St. The $7 meal includes spaghetti, garlic toast, salad, dessert and drink. Proceeds benefit the VVA scholarship funds.

AHS parent/student meeting

A parent/student meeting for grades 9-11 at Athens High School is at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the school cafeteria. Registration procedures, course offerings and graduation requirements will be discussed.

Rescue Squad needs items

Athens-Limestone Rescue Squad is taking drop-off donations of saleable items for an upcoming garage sale fundraiser. Items accepted seven days a week. Take items to 1401 Freeman Ave. in Athens.

Disaster kit items needed

RSVP/HandsOn Athens is preparing disaster kits for senior citizens and needs donated items to include: Small flashlights with extra batteries, whistles, manual can opener, first-aid kits, moist towelettes, hand sanitizers, garbage bags, zip lock plastic bags, playing cards, toilet tissue and pocket-size tissue. Deliver to RSVP, 409 W. Washington St. by the end of March.

New Orleans trip

Athelstine banquet

Tickets are available for the Athelstine Lodge No. 71 annual banquet to be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 22 at Round Island Creek Missionary Baptist Assoc. facility on Lucas Ferry Road. Featured speaker is Dr. Alfred Brinkley of Athens and author of “Courageous Expectations.” Tickets can be purchased from lodge members at $25 for adults and $15 for age 14 and under.

Donnell House fundraiser

A bridge tournament to raise funds for the restoration of the Donnell House will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, at Donnell House. Cost to play is $25. Brunch served.
