Athens falls at home

Allen Creasy had no doubt heading into Friday’s game against Hartselle that it would be a hard fought contest.

The Athens High head coach was right, but in the end, the Tigers prevailed as they defeated the Golden Eagles 32-22 at Golden Eagle Stadium.

“Neither team quit,” Creasy said. “Both played until the last snap, but we made more mistakes than they did and that was the difference. That’s something we can fix. You can always improve on execution and mental mistakes that you make when your playing hard, and most of the ones we had were defensive mistakes where guys were trying to make plays and Hartselle was executing well and making us pay for those. That’s the nature of the game, but I’m very proud of how our guys played.”

Hartselle struck first on a 20-yard field goal by Dylan Stephenson that was set up earlier by a 45-yard run with 8:27 to go in the first quarter for a 3-0 lead. The Tigers added seven more points just before time expired on a 2-yard run by Malcolm Fossett.

A 12-yard field goal by Athens’ Armand Hunt narrowed the lead to 10-3 at the beginning of the second quarter. The Golden Eagles were able to knot the score at 10 on a 13-yard pass from quarterback Stephen Rivers to Chandler Brock, but Hartselle took a 17-10 lead with 59 seconds remaining before halftime on a 20-yard pass from Will Lang to William Tiffin.

The Golden Eagles took a 22-17 lead on back-to-back scores in the third quarter on a 21-yard pass from Rivers to Chris Cain.

Hartselle scored twice more in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
