TANNER— Two new chapters were written into the history books at Rip Swanner Stadium Friday night.

For the first time since 1994, Tanner’s 24-9 win over Elkmont helped the Rattlers’ end the regular season on a perfect 10-0 note. As for the Red Devils, the loss helped them claim the football programs first region championship in school history.

“I told our guys the other night, that when we started practice back in June, our goal was to get one more win to get a home playoff game,” Elkmont coach Don Jacobs said. “Did I ever think we would be region champs? No, it never crossed my mind. Maybe I didn’t set my goals high enough, maybe I set them to low, but we worked hard every week to try and win one more game. I told them not to get too discouraged about the loss because we probably didn’t play our best tonight, but we still have accomplished so much and we’re the No. 1 seed in Class 3A, Region 8 and that says a lot right there.”

Tanner scored late in the first quarter on a 5-yard run by sophomore Tray Cosby. Mark Adams extra point was good for the 7-0 lead.

David Adams extended the lead with 2:15 left to play in the first half on a 15-yard pass from Cosby. Dominique Randolph hit C.C. Lucas shortly after on a 45-yard touchdown pass to head into the locker room with a 21 point lead.

“We just couldn’t get them off the field in the first half,” Jacobs said. “We’re not the only ones though. There have been a lot of folks this season who have had trouble getting those jokers off the field. It was a heart breaking loss, but we ended up with the No. 1 seed in Region 8. Imagine that.”

An 18-yard field goal by Mark Adams with 5:25 left to play in the third quarter was the Rattlers only other score of the night.

Elkmont got on the board early in the fourth on a 27-yard field goal by David Solomon. Hayden Huseth hit Ian Milan with a 5-yard touchdown pass at the midway mark. Solomon’s extra point was blocked.

“We had a pretty good game plan, and the guys did it to perfection early in the game” Tanner coach Laron White said. “The guys bought into it and I knew it was a matter of time before Elkmont found something. They found some step at the end. Overall we did a good job.

“Going 10-0 is pretty special,” White added. “It’s good for the coaching staff and the kids for all the work they did this summer. That’s a credit to them but at the same time they’ve got to realize we’ve got more games to play and we just got to soak it in and get ready to go Monday.”
