It has truly been an honor for me to serve the citizens of the City of Athens for the past eight years, the past two years as your Mayor.
Athens is one of the fastest growing cities in North Alabama, and I frequently hear comments from newcomers regarding the beauty and friendly people in our city. Let’s continue to work together to keep it this way!
I have been married to Sandra Neal Marks for 44 years and we have two children and three grandchildren. We are life-long residents of Athens and Limestone County, and raised and educated our children, Rhodney and Laura, in the Athens school system. Sandra and I worship at Friendship United Methodist Church where I rotate teaching our Sunday School class.
What people need to understand is that the city is a big business, with budgets in the millions that need to be spent wisely and accounted for with integrity. Developing and managing a conservative budget by the mayor and City Council continues to be one of our highest priorities.
The city has approximately 340 full-time employees, and it is critical that we continue to work together to provide quality services to our citizens. I will continue to have an open door policy for all city employees and citizens.
Our job is to provide quality government services, and I always have the same five basic areas of concern that must be addressed. They are: (1) public safety, which includes police and fire protection; (2) jobs and economic development; (3) education; (4) recreation; and (5) quality of life.
Prior to assuming the job as mayor of Athens, I was field manager for Gov. Riley’s Hurricane Katrina Emergency Relief. Shortly after coming on board as mayor, seven tornadoes hit Limestone County in April 2011, and tornadoes hit again in March 2012. The experience that I gained in working with Gov. Riley’s relief effort was a tremendous benefit in dealing with victims in Athens and Limestone County. The natural disasters we have recently faced have made us stronger than we have been in many years.
My charge as mayor is to continue to work with all city and county resources by building a team that can give the greatest service to our citizens.
We have made great progress during the last two years, and I would like to continue serving as your mayor for the next four years. I humbly ask for your vote and support on August 28.
